Did you know that once you graduate from medical school in the UK, you are still not recognised as a doctor in the USA? In order to practice medicine the USA either permanently or temporarily you must sit the United States Medical Licensing Exams (USMLE).
The Barts USMLE society is the first and only UK student society aimed at helping students/doctors sit their USMLEs. We welcome you to our inaugural lecture - "An introduction to the USMLEs". This 1 hour lecture will give an overview on what is needed in order to apply for permanent or temporary jobs in the USA. We will focus particularly on the USMLE Step 1 exam where we will go over past paper questions, useful resources, tell you when in medical school to sit it and give you revision timetables.
There are a growing number of doctors in certain specialities (Surgeons/Interventional radiologists) who visit the USA for a 1 year clinical fellowship. This does wonders to their clinical experience and CVs. It is highly recommended by many surgical consultants and in certain sub-specialties almost mandatory. Every year the Barts student office gets hundreds of requests from Barts graduate doctors who want to sit the USMLEs. Whilst most in the UK sit their USMLEs post MBBS we feel that the best time to sit these exams are in medical school.
Our introductory lecture will be given by 3 final year Barts medical students as well as doctors at the Royal London Hospital who have sat their USMLEs. Whilst the lecture will focus on the USMLE in regards to the Barts syllabus, we also welcome all external medical students and doctors to come along.
This is a fantastic opportunity that does not come around often. A lot of work and effort has been put into this and we are sure there will be large turnout. Don't miss out!
